Neo-Riemannian Triadic Progressions
Neo-Riemannian theory offers a system for analyzing triadic progressions that are chromatic or harmonically remote but connected by smooth, parsimonious voice-leading. Rather than explaining chord relationships through functional categories (tonic, predominant, dominant) or key areas, neo-Riemannian analysis focuses on the minimal number of voice-leading moves needed to transform one triad into another. The theory is named for the 19th-century German theorist Hugo Riemann, whose ideas about harmonic dualism and tonal function were later reinterpreted by American music theorists in the 1980s and 1990s.
The three fundamental neo-Riemannian operations are P (Parallel), L (Leading-tone exchange), and R (Relative). The P operation toggles a triad between major and minor while keeping the root and fifth fixed — only the third moves by a half step (C major ↔ C minor). The L operation keeps the third and fifth of the triad while moving the remaining note by a half step to produce a triad of opposite quality — C major becomes E minor (the root C moves down a half step to B). The R operation keeps the root and third while moving the fifth by a whole step, relating each major triad to its relative minor — C major becomes A minor. Each of these operations is its own inverse: applying P twice returns to the original chord.
Chains of P, L, and R operations trace paths across the "Tonnetz" — a two-dimensional lattice in which triads that share two common tones are adjacent. A cycle of L and R operations alternating (LRLRLR...) produces a sequence of six triads that moves through thirds before returning to the start; a cycle of P and L produces a different six-chord loop. These chains appear in the music of Schubert, Liszt, and Wagner, where third-related harmonies — often with no obvious diatonic explanation — create the sense of vast tonal space or dreamlike harmonic wandering.
Neo-Riemannian analysis is most useful when functional Roman-numeral analysis breaks down or feels forced: in music where chromatic third-relations dominate, where brief tonicizations are stacked without clear key centers, or where composers treat triads as sonic objects to be transformed rather than as functional agents. The key question in a neo-Riemannian reading is not "what key is this chord in?" but "how many voices move, by how much, to get from this chord to the next?" — and the answer is almost always one or two voices moving by a half or whole step.
